Fix Sonos TV audio that stops or skips
Isolate the TV, source, HDMI or optical cable, firmware, audio format, and Sonos home-theater product without hiding the failure.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Unplug the TV and connected source device for 10 seconds, reconnect them, and retest. Inspect the HDMI or optical cable for full insertion, bends, and kinks; substitute another cable when available. Update the TV, then test Stereo or PCM output. Finally disconnect Sonos and listen through the TV speakers: if dropouts remain, the TV or source path needs separate troubleshooting rather than more Sonos changes.

Scope before steps.
Sonos home-theater speakers whose TV audio plays but intermittently stops, skips, or drops from one or more connected TV sources.
A Sonos home-theater product with no TV sound at all, music-service interruptions, grouped-room latency, Bluetooth playback, or opening a speaker or television.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Restart the TV and source together
Unplug the TV and each connected audio source, such as a console or cable box, wait 10 seconds, reconnect power, and retest the same program.
- 02
Prove the cable path
Inspect the HDMI or optical cable for kinks, bends, and incomplete insertion. For optical, verify red light at the disconnected Sonos end while the TV source is on. Test another cable when available.
- 03
Update and simplify the TV format
Install the TV manufacturer’s current software, then change digital audio output to Stereo or PCM for a controlled comparison.
- 04
Remove Sonos from the comparison
Disconnect the Sonos product, select the TV speakers, and replay the same source long enough to reproduce the original interruption.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo or PCM plays without interruption | Return to the original format once to confirm the failure follows it, then contact the TV manufacturer. | The physical audio path works while the TV format pass-through branch remains unstable. |
| Dropouts continue through the TV speakers | Troubleshoot the TV and source with Sonos disconnected. | Sonos is no longer in the failing signal path. |
| A substitute cable fixes the interruption | Retire the failing cable and verify stable playback on more than one source. | The fault followed the cable rather than the TV format or Sonos speaker. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not bend an optical cable sharply or look directly into an active optical output at close range.
- Do not factory-reset Sonos before proving the TV, source, cable, and format branches.
- Contact Sonos when interruptions remain only with Sonos after the documented isolation; contact the TV maker when the fault follows the TV speakers or one output format.
