Diagnose an LG TV that has picture but no sound
Separate mute, source-device volume, Sound Out selection, HDMI path, and TV speaker hardware with LG’s Sound Self-Diagnosis.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Check mute and volume on both the LG TV and any set-top box or source device, then set Sound Out to the intended internal speaker or connected audio device. Reseat the HDMI cable and restart both devices. Run LG Sound Self-Diagnosis: if its test sound plays, the TV speakers work and the fault is in the source, cable, or output selection; if the test is silent, contact LG for service.

Scope before steps.
LG webOS televisions that show picture but produce no sound through the internal TV speakers or a selected external source path.
Model-specific soundbar repair, Bluetooth pairing alone, distorted or delayed audio, broadcast-provider outages, or a single menu path for every webOS year.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Check both volume controls
Clear mute and raise volume on the LG TV and on the connected set-top box, console, or other source.
- 02
Choose the intended Sound Out
Open All Settings > Sound > Sound Out and select TV Internal Speaker or the actual connected audio device.
- 03
Reseat and restart the source path
Reconnect both HDMI ends, try another known-good HDMI cable if available, and restart the TV and external source.
- 04
Run Sound Self-Diagnosis
Use the menu path LG documents for the TV’s webOS year to run Sound Self-Diagnosis or Sound Test.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| The self-test sound plays normally | Return to the affected source and check its mute, volume, cable, and selected Sound Out. | The LG TV speakers can produce sound; the fault is outside the tested internal path. |
| Built-in apps have sound but one HDMI source does not | Focus on that source device, its volume, HDMI cable, and output format. | The TV audio system works on another content path. |
| The self-test is also silent | Record the result and request LG support or service. | The problem is no longer limited to one input or source device. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not open the TV cabinet or internal speaker assembly.
- Stop using a damaged HDMI cable or a device that causes heat, odor, or electrical noise.
- Contact LG when Sound Self-Diagnosis is silent after the correct Sound Out and volume checks.
