Diagnose a Samsung TV remote that does not work

Separate battery or charging failure, infrared output, Smart Remote pairing, the television itself, and universal-control problems.

Direct answer

The shortest reliable path.

Reset the remote using Samsung’s procedure for its type, replace or recharge its power source, and test whether an infrared remote emits a signal through a phone camera. For a Samsung Smart Remote, stand close to the TV and pair it with Return plus Play/Pause. If the TV also ignores its physical controls, move the diagnosis to the television rather than the remote.

Scope before steps.

Applies to

Samsung television, Odyssey Ark, or projector remotes that do not control the Samsung display, including battery, solar, infrared, and Smart Remote variants.

Does not cover

Internal remote repair, every regional remote layout, third-party universal remotes, or external-device control before the Samsung TV itself works.

Procedure

Do this in order.

  1. 01

    Reset and power the remote

For a battery remote, remove the batteries and hold Power for eight seconds before reinstalling fresh batteries. Follow Samsung’s separate reset for a solar Smart Remote.

  2. 02

    Test infrared output when applicable

Point the remote at a phone or digital camera and hold Power while watching for a colored infrared light on the camera screen.

  3. 03

    Pair a Samsung Smart Remote

Stand within one foot of the TV and hold Return plus Play/Pause for at least five seconds or until the connection message appears.

  4. 04

Separate TV control from universal control

First confirm the remote controls Samsung menus, then troubleshoot Universal Remote Setup and the external device as a separate branch.

Stop conditions

Know when not to keep changing things.

  • Do not open or puncture a rechargeable remote battery.
  • Do not replace the remote solely because external-device power control fails while Samsung menus still work.
  • Request service when the TV ignores both a proven transmitting remote and its own physical controls.
