Fix a PlayStation console that cannot connect to the internet
Separate PlayStation service status, Wi-Fi credentials, router security, hidden networks, IPv6-only configuration, wired connection, and advanced settings.
Direct answer
The shortest reliable path.
Check PlayStation service status before changing the console or router. On PS5, use Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection; on PS4, use Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection. Verify the SSID, password, and security method, test whether other devices can reach the internet, and use a wired connection when possible. If a Wi-Fi network is missing, use manual setup or WPS only when supported. PS5 supports IPv6 connections but not an IPv6-only network, so the router must also provide IPv4.

Scope before steps.
PS5 and PS4 consoles that cannot find Wi-Fi, reject a network configuration, or cannot reach PlayStation services over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Account suspensions, payment problems, game-server outages, unsafe port forwarding, ISP repair, or inventing DNS, MTU, proxy, or IP values.
Procedure
Do this in order.
- 01
Check the service before the home network
Open PlayStation service status and note any active incident or maintenance window. If services are down, wait and retest before changing equipment.
- 02
Rebuild the supported console connection
On PS5 open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection; on PS4 open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection. Select the correct network and re-enter its credentials and security method.
- 03
Separate wireless from internet failure
Test another device on the same Wi-Fi, then test the console through Ethernet when available. If the SSID is missing, use manual setup or the router’s supported WPS path.
- 04
Check the PS5 IPv4 requirement
If the router is configured for IPv6 only, change it with the router manufacturer or network administrator so IPv4 is also available. Leave advanced console settings automatic unless the network administrator provides exact values.
Diagnostic matrix
Read the result, not the guess.
| What you see | Check next | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Other devices also cannot reach the internet | Troubleshoot the router or ISP rather than resetting the PlayStation console. | The failure is shared upstream of the console. |
| Ethernet works while Wi-Fi fails | Recheck SSID, password, security, signal, and router wireless configuration. | The console and internet service work over the wired path. |
| The console connects locally but PlayStation services fail | Recheck service status, account sign-in, and the exact network test result. | Local network association succeeded; the failure is later in the service path. |
Stop conditions
Know when not to keep changing things.
- Do not enter invented manual IP, DNS, MTU, proxy, or port-forwarding values.
- Do not factory-reset the router without the administrator’s configuration and ISP credentials.
- Contact the ISP, router manufacturer, or network administrator when the same network fails across devices or needs IPv4 configuration changes.
